Most of us are pretty bad at maintaing truly close relationships with our lovers. There are so many distractions in today's world and it is ever so easy to get wrapped up in your own personal wants and needs. Trust me, I know about about this because I have an advanced degree in being selfish! Several wonderful relationships have been ruined by my selfish attention to my own needs.

A number of years ago one of my students gave me a little Valentine's day gift. It's a very tiny unassuming flower pot with a little plastic flower in it. It's so small it's hardly noticeable. The gift was a reminder about maintaining a relationship with a women. You see relationships are alive like flowers. You must water and nurture it just the right amount. Each one is different and requires it's own mixture of ingrediants to thrive. So you have to understand yours and pay close attention to her.

If you pay attention, and feed it with care the flower will blossom and warm your heart with it's beauty. But if you focus on yourself, even for a little while, the flower will wither and die without your care. To this day that little plastic flower sits on my office table as a reminder. Every day it tells me there are three things that I must do --- pay attention, pay attention, pay attention!
